Past The Age Of Anime

anime borders aisle
Will you ever lose interest in anime?

I had lunch with Rona, Meg, and some other girl (but I always forget her name), at Ortega. With the exception of Rona, we all talked about anime&manga and the anime expo. Haha… it was sort of funny and very reminiscent of my younger years. I still haven’t watched any anime is over a year. Maybe two years. And when I pass the large section of manga at Borders there is simply no desire in me to go over there and buy any.

Anime Downloads

anime black lagoon
Click through for a review of this anime download site.
I downloaded a few of the Anime DVDS, they were first episodes of series including ” Black Lagoon ” which when I went to play turned out to be in Japanese with American subtitles, now I’m not sure about how everyone feels about this particular aspect of viewing anime, but for me I would rather watch the Anime in English, without the subtitles but that’s just me.

anime stage6 shut down
No more anime from Stage6.

And before I go, Stage6 was shut down last February 28 for some reasons. Why??? I love Stage6 because I got to watch films there with good quality and some anime as well. Maybe because it’s expensive to run the site or because of too many competitors .. like youtube, veoh etc.

Gaogaigar

anime gaogaigar
Like we've never heard this:

One of the benefits of a really long commute is that it provides plenty of time for catching up on TV shows (and since I can watch about 5 episodes per day like this, I’ve been watching more than just anime.) I think I downloaded GaoGaiGar about a year ago. I watched the first 5 or 6 episodes, then forgot about it, then watched another 5 or 6 a little bit later before getting a little bit bored of it.

Now and Then, Here and There

anime now and then here and there
A good review of Now and Then, Here and There.

My first though was “Wow - this must be old!”. I’ve gotten used to watching anime that fits within a somewhat homogeneous style, so when I see something like this it is rather a shock. It actually isn’t that old - it was released in 1999. That’s newer than Lain (1998) or Utena (1997). Unfortunately my mind links that style with stuff like Speed Racer, or Lupin, and I often have a hard time enjoying something like this. Luckily that wasn’t a problem with this one since the story soon took over and I stopped noticing it.

Review: Midori No Hibi

anime midori no hibi
Nice write-up on Midori no Hibi here.
Lets get right into the Anime goodness with the most recent anime title I viewed. The title of this Anime is Midori no Hibi, a small 13 episode anime dealing with the story of Sawamura Seiji. Sawamura grows up never having a girlfriend thanks to his deliquent behaviors, but has tried countless times to "confess" to a girl. Everytime he tries it's always too aggressive which scares off the girl and leaves him depressed and angry.

Mecha

anime code geass
Code Geass is a diamond in the rough of mecha.
Truthfully, I never really appreciated/liked mecha, it’s always been my downfall as an anime fan. However, among the slew of relatively crap mecha shows, once in a while a diamond in the rough will appear, last time it was the FMP series and this time it’s Code Geass. The reason why these two rise above all other mecha shows I’ve watched is because of the battle tactics.

I watch subbed anime, so that’s bascially what you’re going to see here. (I’d love to get my hands on some raw, though, especially if I make some AMVs. *___* I’m tired of cropping! x_x;) I’ll also be veering into video games, especially Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. As well, I’ll discuss some PVs if I get my hands on any. I may talk about manga, primary Tsubasa from the looks of my collection, and some anime related news (like how YTV’s planning on getting themselves an anime channel O=). I hope that works out xD

Transformers Transformed

anime transformers
This blogger doesn't think the film version of The Transformers caught the spirit of the original.
Look, I'm not such a G1 purist that I demand cartoon accurate designs -- but this is just too much! It's too far removed from the essence of Transformers, which has remained more or less intact throughout all incarnations of the series over the past 20 years. And from what has been leaked, the script is about as far off as the character designs are.

On the Inuyasha love triangle:

Of course, every Inuyasha fan knows about the Inuyasha-Kagome-Kikyou love triangle. There has been much debate about who Inuyasha would choose, and who’s deserving to be with him. Anime Versus Cartoon

anime tv
Different cultures, different preferences.

Review: Jubei-Chan 2

anime jubei
Nice write-up of the Jubei-Chan 2 DVD.

The various incarnations of the Jubei franchise are all based upon permutations of the same story: a seventeenth-century warrior hero dies on the field of battle, but not before impregnating his heart-shaped eye patch with his spirit and entrusting it to his loyal retainer, Koinosuke. Koinosuke's solemn duty is to wait for and find Jubei's spiritual heir and give him or her the eye patch, which can then call forth Jubei's fighting spirit. He finds her in Jiyu Noanohana, a schoolgirl who wants nothing to do with this warrior spirit. The series is intended to be a spoof of samurai and ninja anime with a healthy dose of bouncing breasts and lots of comedy.

Saiunkoku Monogatari is labeled as a “Comedy, Historical, Romance, Shoujo” anime on Anidb. Normally, I’m not too big a fan of the historical and shoujo genres, but since Ayu fansubs was doing it, and I like most of the series they sub, I thought I’d give this anime a shot.

Fansubs

games triad fansub logo
Click through for links to fansub sites.

Fansubs are subtitled videos created by fans, and are generally released and distributed over the Internet. The movement for fansubbing was driven forward by English-language fans of Japanese origin television such as anime and dramas. Fansubs exist in many languages other than English, but English language subs are the most common. It is because of volunteer fansub communities around the world that anime and J-drama has achieved a wide following around the world. Most fansub groups see themselves as evangelists for Japanese media industries overseas, and will only subtitle series that have yet to be licensed in the target language. Once a series has been slated for commercial release overseas, most fansub groups will remove their works from the net.

Review: Appleseed

anime appleseed scene
Nice write up of the new Appleseed here:
Masume Shirow’s Appleseed recently got a second anime treatment. The last was in 1988 – this time, in 2004, the anime is done up in eye-popping 3D graphics. With a budget of only 10 million as compared to over 90 million for a movie like The Incredibles, we shouldn’t be expecting too much. Surprisingly, we get far more than expected, especially with regards to the wonderfuly rendered backgrounds. While the animation is interesting enough, the story is more problematic. So too are the change in the feel of the characters. This is really where the original version succeeds far better than Aramaki’s version.

Review: Mao-Chan, Vol. 3

anime mao chan earth defense
Nice write-up on Mao-Chan here.

Why oh why can't "cute" series also have some substance? At least Cardcaptor Sakura had lovable characters and a nifty magical system. This one will probably send today's sophisticated eight-year-olds into a frenzy of sugar-induced vomiting. However, it does come from anime creator Ken Akamatsu, so the visuals are at least interesting and attractive enough. The show, not unlike the Pokemon franchise, was specifically created to appeal to little girls, so the kawaii factor is off the charts and may appeal even to adults on a level they can't explain, justify, or admit. If you've ever wanted to squee when you saw a baby kitten or a cute wittle wabbit, then give this one a shot—you just might like it, and, hey, we won't tell.

I finally watched episode 2 of Hana Yori Dango. It took freaking forever to DL (like two days! DX) because there were more people downloading it than the # of seeds available. Episode 3 won’t take that long though, maybe like 4 hours. If I was DLing an http file it would take like one hour, man…darn bt. Although bittorrent can be useful sometimes. No Chimera Brides For You

anime full metal alchemist cover
Don't get your hopes up for that Full Metal Alchemist wedding.

That old hayseed “Dub-ya” was ranting about the evils of modern science he started listing off atrocities he’d like to make illegal. the first two were your normal fare: the cloning of human beings and the use of embryos and experiments. The third one, however, perked my ears right on up. It seems that the president is very concerned about human-animal hybrids. He just slipped it in like it was nothing, and, strangely enough, possible. What kind of strange “Full Metal Alchemist” world is George Bush living in if he thinks human-animal hybrids are a major issue worth mentioning in a State of the Union speech? Who is his science adviser, Cris Carter? At what point did centaurs become a national crisis?

Hellsing OVA 01

anime hellsing
A good Hellsing digest here.

The very much anticipated Hellsing OVA. Before I start, I’ve heard a few odd things about this release, in that it’s A) a 30 minutes trailer that Aired on TV, B) The OVA isn’t out till Feb 10th. C) The real first ep will be 50 minutes and D) This is a leak of the OVA’s first episode. For once, I have absolutely no idea what’s true and what’s not. But regardless of ALL of that, this episode was nothing short of kick ass. The characters have been re-designed this time to look much more like they appear in the manga, and those pesky human excess characters (Ferguson I’m looking at you) have been kept out, this is a near 100% accurate manga to anime transition. Everything looks great, top billing on the animation and artwork. The soundtracks quite the contrast from the eerie and low key blues that went exceptionally well with the TV series, this time around we’ve got more fast paced beats for the battles. Not sure, but judging by the first episode alone, I think I preferred the TV’s soundtrack.

To get the downloads, all you need is to speak Japanese.

As a way of sampling a show, this is a great idea (although it’s often hard to get a feel for a show from just one episode). What I wouldn’t give to see the Western anime companies give out samplers like this…

Fansubs

anime funimation
Good post on the value of fansubs as Funimation fights for its rights.

The fansub scene is two sided right now. There are people who are active in the online community, but can genuinely consider fansubs as an alternative to DVDs. Then there are those who are active in the online community, who consider fansubs as a step toward purchase of a show legitimately. It is the former of these two personas that is the enemy of the anime industry, but I think, at least for now, the benifits of maintaining the following of the latter persona makes up for this. Every person I’ve met online who follows fansubs, ALSO purchases a considerable amount of anime DVDs, certainly far more than they would if fansubs did not exist. I know people who only got into anime due to fansubs, and who now spend considerable amounts on DVDs.

On Saturday evening, I got the chance to sit down and watch some anime on the cartoon network. I saw. . . hmm. . . lessee, Boboboboboadnaseum, Zach Bell, Naruto, Inuyasha, and Full Metal Alchemist. That is a lot of wide eyed, wide mouthed, freaky blonde haired. anorexic teens, lemme tell you.

Bleach Elitist

anime beach cover
Seems like inane arguments about Bleach to me, too.

Okay, one of my favorite anime’s right now is Bleach. Unfortunatly choosing this as one of my favorites kind of puts me in the middle of the current war that has been silently going on since the Bleach anime appeared. And that war is whether you like the manga over the anime. Now this is NOTHING new for the web community, I mean I’ve seen this same war played out back when Sailormoon was in it’s peak popularity. However, after listening to many inane arguments I’ve finally become sick of the whole thing.

Read the whole thing.

Four and Twenty Full Metal Lovecraftian Horrors

anime full metal alchemist
Personally, I like Full Metal Alchemist.

Tonight, I finished pounding my way through the entirety of Full Metal Alchemist (the anime version). As I was starting the series, I was warned that it was extremely dark, very fucked up, not very good, teh suck, and several other things besides. For the most part, many of these warnings, statements, etc. were wrong. In some cases, these admonitions were really wrong, in some cases kinda right.

Animal Yokocho

anime animal yokocho
Animal Yokocho doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

The opening song for Animal Yokocho was great. It’s sung in a cutesy, child-like voice and could be catchy if you spoke Japanese. It’s not a bad show, just don’t watch the series expecting any seriousness or plot. It’s pretty childish, although some of it was funny. If you’re into kiddie animes that are kind’ve random, you’ll probably enjoy this. If not, you won’t.

I use BitTorrent. I am a fan of anime and anyone who watches anime knows it is hard to find episodes in english or episodes released in america. I don’t mind fansub’s either. Anyway, to the point, i am using BitComet and i was downloading the second episode of this new series i am going to check out titled ‘Tsubasa Chronicle’.

I haven't had a chance to watch Shakugan no Shana yet.

Another noteworthy anime of this new season is Shakugan no Shana. I watched the first episode unsubbed a few minutes ago. We are presented with a mixture of a cute fiery badass girl with sword, large cast of amazing characters, well designed enemies, mysterious and profound plot, top notch animation, grand music, and a solid powerful presentation. What more can you ask for?

A Blood+ fan here:

This will be recieving a far more detailed response than any other anime up to this point because, well, it’s indubitably the best show of the season. Except maybe for Noein, which airs this… Thursday, I think. Noein may still beat out Blood+, but for now, Blood+ is simply the best.

Anime Update

anime full metal alchemist
Check out Full Metal Panic.

Full Metal Panic fumoffu - a hilariously funny installment. Read somewhere that it follow the manga very closely. Had wanted to try out this series after FMA (Full Metal Alchemist) but got distracted. Anyway, mighty glad I downloaded it. Now can hardly wait for the rest of the eps to be fansubbed. Thus far at eps 4. Surprisingly, this series is way back in 2003… now only appearing in fansubs.

Great show on Adult Swim.

Full Metal Alchemist is an anime that comes on cartoon network during it’s “Adult Swim” timeslots. Everytime I see it’s coming on the on-screen guide, I stay up… despite having work very shortly… to watch it. I like it a lot. It’s probably one of the first shows in a long time I’d consider myself a fan of in a long time. Watch it if you get the chance and we can talk about it…. if you’re dorky enough…

I’m up through episode 9 of Naruto. It’s great. It’s funny and entertaining, and the ninja theme is awesome. They yell out the moves like in Street Fighter, Pokemon, or Dragonball. “Kage Bushin No Jutsu!!” And cool stuff like that. =P Jenn was totally right. Naruto makes me want to eat ramen.

Naruto On Cartoon Network

anime naruto girl
A request to watch the original Naruto before it comes out on Cartoon Network.

for those of you out there who haven’t watched the original naruto yet, i beg of you to watch it before watching the cartoon network version. please do not judge this great story by the diluted version cartoon network will release. i’m actually for children watching the watered down version, but i think adults who are interested in it (which is oddly cartoon network’s target audience) should read the manga and watch the original anime. i know i’ll watch the “americanized” version as well and get some enjoyment out of it, but i’ll always love the original.

Full Metal Alchemist

anime full metal alchemist
Finally some time for Full Metal Alchemist.

These last few days have bestowed upon me more good than I deserve. Basically, I’ve been doing nothing but working and seeing friends. It’s a dramatic change from before when all my free time (When I wasn’t making a feeble attempt to study for classes or working) was taken up by painting the basement. It’s very welcome. The peace between various engagements (I no longer have cause to hear the nagging voice that procrastinators are well acquainted with) has given me time to watch Full Metal Alchemist and finish Harry Potter (I mourn Dumbledore with a heavy heart… rest in peace, old friend). But the engagements itself were worth all the while.

Anime Reviews

anime iriya no sora
Lots of good anime reviews in this post.
I finally watched Iriya no Sora – UFO no Natsu. It’s an OAV series and 5 out of 6 videos have been released. Overall rating so far? Great (3.5/5.0) The theme and tone is similar to Saikano, though not as dark. The pace holds it back from having an indubitable impact on the market. Iriya relies strongly on the speckled instances of tone that it delivers.

Good overview of Naruto.

If you are not a follower of anime like myself, it’s a wonder that I would fall for Naruto, but I did. Naruto is an anime/manga series that follow the path of a boy-ninja as he is developed from a lonely parentless outcast to a proud relentless ninja. His motto is “to never give up” regardless of the challenge in front of him.

Yami No Matsuei

anime yami no matsuei
Good Yami no Matsuei write up here.

The anime and manga Yami no Matsuei contain a quality storyline along with wonderful characters. One of my favorite characters is the mercilessly graceful Dr. Kazutaka Muraki, a surgeon with an obsession with the shinigami Asato Tsuzuki, due to his talents and power. The reasons that I enjoy Kazutaka as a character are numerous, but I’ll cover the main ones here.

Review: Bleach

anime bleach shot
Everyone seems to love Bleach.

This is such an awesome manga. No wonder it was considered Japan’s most popular manga ever read, because the characters are awesome!!! The way the story is played is a wee bit like Kare Kano, where the story plays all the roles of both the important characters and the new characters. There is a good slice for everyone in this manga. There is lots of action, comedy, trauma, and maybe a little romance, but it’s devilishly fun.

Da Capo

anime da capo scene
I didn't know about the connection between Da Capo and Circus.

Back in its time, Da Capo was one of those animes that probably instigated the new wave, a sudden outburst of the popularity of bishoujo games being converted into anime. The game was made by a company named Circus, and I can only imagine how big the Da Capo franchise is to them. With already 7 games (maybe more) composed of rehashes, fandisks, after stories and console versions, Da Capo is huge on the games front. Not to mention all those singles, drama cds, and manga serializations. Da Capo is as big as any Dengeki G's series such as Futakoi.

Inuyasha Without Kagome

anime inuyasha
I've never heard someone describe their mood in these wonderful terms.

I feel like Inuyasha without Kagome. Raistlin without Crysania. And on nights like last night, there’s a good chance I will just get dragged further into my pool of melodrama, despondency, and loneliness because I do not have someone to temper me. Male or female, there isn’t anyone I call who will make me feel better. *shrug* It’s like I told Meggan a week or so ago just before she jumped me for having a pity-party: most of us don’t have many friends, or perhaps any friends. We just have enough acquaintances, hobbies, and jobs to distract us from the lack. Some of us will have 1 or 2 friends—if we’re lucky 3 or a few more—but when it’s 2 AM and the lights are out and we’re scared, alone, and feeling utterly horrible, who will we call? I pray, largely because I don’t have anyone to call. I probably wouldn’t be as tight with God right now if I had someone to call. That’s probably His intention, as Chris pointed out.

Fruits Basket Fan

anime fruits basket cover
I like Fruits Basket, too.
I know it may sound dull, but this is probably one of–if not the best–anime series I’ve seen. Animation is great, plot is pretty easy to follow. A couple characters aren’t described as much as I would have liked. Another one of those that causes you to think about how you view the world. It’s really odd to get so involved with the characters in anime, or is it? It’s like after watching 12 hours of it you can get really attached to some of the characters. I know trying to explain this to most people makes me sound weird, more weird than what some people think of me already.

Anime Invades The U.S.!

anime sen to chihiro no kamikakushi spirited away
Anime seems to be getting more and more mainstream media attention.

LANTERNS LINE VILLAGE WALLS. An abandoned theme park. Temples, lakes and food fit for gods. It’s a cartoon, but a beautiful, stunningly realistic one that leaves the audience hushed at this dinky art house theater in South Florida. Most wait until the last credit leaves the screen. The movie is Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi in Japanese) and it’s the latest anime hit in the US. Anime in America is winning more sales and fans than ever before.

Review: Howl's Moving Castle

anime howl's moving castle
As good as The Incredibles? Check out Howl's Moving Castle:

Interestingly, the most realistic effects in this movie are the scenes of warfare when viewed from a distance. The scenes of aerial combat, exploding bombs, and burning cities that provide such an effective backdrop to Sophie's adventures are grim and horrific and not pitched towards the anime gadget-lover. They're scary. That's the idea.

I have to admit I haven't seen Spirited Away, either!

To make a long story short, I’ve created yet another anime-addict. He rented a couple of anime movies on Tuesday, and invited me over to watch one. So, last night we watch a film, which means I must now make two confessions. Firstly, if you’re an anime fan, you’re about to say “What?!” because every time I confess the following, that’s what I get. So, here goes. Until last night, I had never seen Hayao Miyazaki’s award-winning film, Spirited Away.

Our little common interest was our obsession with Tekken 3, and the mututal love and adoration for Jin Kazama. The Other Side of BitTorrent

Fansubbing a Good Thing?

anime naruto fansubbing
This blogger takes exception to Joi Ito's remarks in Wired.

However, what Mr. Ito said in the article was correct that the show is bound to be a huge success in the US. It has the kind of appeal that makes it so popular to a mass market. This is evident in Japan and the fansub community. So when the series is released to mainstream America, odds are that it will be a hit even with the non-anime fans. It will thrive on the television, action figure, and video game market, much like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon did in the past. You will also a small portion of those fans picking up a volume of the manga and discovering...

Anyway, about the Bleach. At first, I was like “yay IchigoxRukia!". Then I went IchigoxIshida. When Renji was introduced, I liked IchigoxRenji. Somewhere along the way, I stared enjoying IshidaxOrihime (don’t ask why, it just suddenly happened ._."). Again, I swtched pairings, and went IchigoxOrihime. When I watched the anime just recently, I started liking likeing RenjixRukia. Watching Princess Mononoke

anime princess mononoke
Princess Mononoke is an anime film worth watching over:

Sunday... oh sweet sunday... nothing sucks more than you. So today granny and gramps went home. Embarrasingly enough they got me rather drunk yesterday so i've been feeling a bit bad today. Went to Malmö this afternoon with my family and Elisabeth to go look at museum with the theme "the brain". It was a bit too scientific and unintersting for me so i mainly went to the older Samurai expo that was next to it. Got home late afternoon and watched Princess Mononoke with Elisaneth and my brother and sister. It was a really good anime flick and i will surely watch it again sometime, next up is my neighbour totoro however.

This critique of an anime website by a reviewer who doesn't like anime ... bad match.

Ahhh Anime cartoons!! I hope you read my reviewer bio before you submitted to me? You will have noticed I’m not a fan of Anime or Manga cartoons. They are everywhere!! So it wasn’t a good idea to pick me to do your review. But of course I’m not going to deduct lots of points because of what I like… that would be unfair!! So instead.. I have deducted two for the Anime and the rest is for the lack of interest on your layout, you’ve basically stuck in a image and faded it at the bottom. Also, you’ve lost marks because...

Well they are all Anime and Manga (I think, don’t know the difference), which doesn’t sit well with me. A plus though is the little persons head on the top of the menu’s they look pretty cool.

As previously mentioned I’m not a fan of Anime/Manga, but I suppose I can’t deduct too many points for that. It’s just that you seem to see it on so many layouts!! Drive’s me nuts. I do like how you have blended the image into the tables though, so you’ve definatly got points for that! And the tables are tidy. So you haven’t lost many marks for this. But, the font for “Wy Designz” ahh!! it’s gross… please change it.

Naruto Versus Inuyasha

This reviewer compares Naruto and InuYasha:

I find this series as interesting as InuYasha with a slightly more complex plot and very interesting twists and turns. The only snag is the draggy repeats and constant flashbacks.

Review: Appleseed Limited Edition

anime appleseed dvd scene
The Appleseed animation has a kind of different feel.

This is a new age anime. It seems that all of it was done with computers and CG. While there is still Cel-Shading, it appears that it was still done with the help of computers. Not that I am complaining about this at all, by any means. It actually looks prettier this way. The meld between CG and Cel-Shading has been done before, but this takes it to a new level. The story takes place in a Utopia called Olympus. Human race has dwindled and now half of the population is now made up of Bioroids, which are essentially cyborgs. This movie was...

Volleyball Related Anime

anime volleyball attach on tomorrow
Some insights on the volleyball anime series of yore.

All three have plots centring around schoolgirls playing volleyball on the school team. Pretty standard sports-genre anime fare… the protagonists develop their skills over ridiculously long story arcs. Since they’re girls, there’s plenty of romance to go along with rivalries and game-related special skills and techniques.

Review: Maburaho

anime maburaho scene
Maburaho sounds like fun!

Tis series take all the conventions that are associated with a harem anime series and adds a magical element to it. This would be pretty original if it wasn’t for the fact that they did the same thing back in the 80’s with Kimagure Orange Road, or more recently with Aki Katsu’s Psychic Academy. But that might not be bad thing. Being unoriginal doesn’t get you points from an intelligent point of view, but they sure can be fun to watch. And that’s exactly what this title is. Fun.

long time no see

anime shoujo air
Nice write up on the Air anime:

It had a pretty sad ending and…if I’m not mistaken, there’s also a lolita complex present there. I don’t really know, I just think the guy and the girl love each other when their ages are quite far apart. Almost all the anime I’ve been downloading so far has similar themes. o_o; Or maybe it’s just me thinking so.

Anime Comic Style

anime cartoon style
This blogger is starting a new online comic. He writes about using the anime style:

Speaking of the actual art; the style I was going to use was a loose form of anime. I’d want to keep things fairly simple, yet have expressive faces to capture emotions and whatnot. Also, since the detail is simple (I don’t want to say lacking, because it really is beautiful in its own right), I can spend a hypothetical (at this point) four hours on a strip and have it look stunning. However, I decided to hold off on picking a style until I got some feedback. With that said, I pose a question: What style do you think would work best...

More on Tsubasa Chronicle

anime tsubasa
More on Tsubasa Chronicle:

Tsubasa's anime adaptation is still kind of dull a lot of the time - my attention really wandered a lot, and the flashbacks to the previous episodes were really quite unnecessary given how it's only the third one! I suspect most of this would be negated if I wasn't just letting most of the dialogue flow over my head. There were more plus points, though, this time round than last in my opinion - the animation was better (Kurogane's fight with the crappy green spikey blob looked good, even if it WAS a crappy green spikey blob) and I'm definitely...

Review: Futakoi

anime futakoi
Nice Futakoi review here:

Interesting new twist on the Futakoi series. I’ve only seen the first episode of the original Futakoi series. From my impressions it seemed like a love story type anime. But this second installment is awesome. Where can you find cute girls with guns and all the action? Of course the characters still compose of twins. This was the first episode but it was already so action packed. The twins seemed the opposite of each other.

Review: Ghost in the Shell

anime ghost in the shell cover
This blogger is reviewing anime movies over at her site. Check it out.

Continuing in my effort to catch up on some of the classics of anime, my next review is for Ghost In the Shell.

I'd actually seen this one years ago, my first exposure to anime beyond a few of the cartoons on Nickelodeon, but at the time, I don't think I was quite ready for it. I found it interesting even then, but it was a little bit overwhelming.

See, it's good anime, and good science-fiction, and good action, but it's not, (and isn't intended to be,) Anime 101.

Bandai Ships DVD and UMD Versions

anime psp plays UMD
Someone in Bandai's marketing department has figured out that the cost of an extra disk is small compared to the possible increase in uptake. Hope this comes to the U.S. soon!

In an interesting story out of the Japanese market and posted by GameIndustry.biz, Anime media giant Bandai will ship titles in both DVD and UMD in the same package. This way, you can buy a movie and play it either on your favorite DVD player or on your PSP.

Brand new anime series Eureka 7, which has been created by the team behind the hugely successful RahXephon, will be the first to get the treatment - with a single box housing both UMD and DVD, for slightly more than the price of buying both separately.

Cross Cultural Cartooning

anime captain euro
Some really good points on differences in culture and cartoons.

I've been musing how Captain Euro compares with another genre containing sci-fi mixed with political content, which tends to promote an alternative viewpoint. I think it is fair to say that everything Captain Euro is, Japanese animation [anime] and printed cartoons [manga] are not.

Take this good-guy headquarters in Captain Euro - in a typical sci-fi anime, by virtue of style, instinct would tell me, yeah, that's the bad-guy motel... bad guys being (pro)government agencies. The most sympathetic depiction of government I have seen in an anime was ambivalent/neutral - and that was unusual.

Anime tend to eschew a squeaky-clean sterile crypto-fascist vision of the future like in, umm, perhaps a Captain Euro, for the dirt and mess and vital creativity of a living culture.

Good-guys in anime fight to kill. Captain Euro fights with "culture, intellect, and logic."

Will Oldboy Get U.S. Distribution

anime manga oldboy film
The makers of Oldboy think it appeals to the anime and manga crowds.

It's got dismemberment sequences, a live octopus-eating scene, stupendous fights and flashy cinematography. So it's not surprising that Quentin Tarantino pushed hard for "Oldboy" in May when he headed the judging panel at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

After South Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park took home the Grand Jury Prize for "Oldboy," the marketing challenge boiled down to how best to promote a movie without stars. "Oldboy" lead player Min-sik Choi is hardly a household name, and even though MJ Peckos, chief executive of Tartan Films USA, has followed Asian cinema for years, she was unfamiliar with Park's pre-"Oldboy" oeuvre. But Peckos says that marquee names are not particularly important to "Oldboy's" target audience. "A lot of these films are appealing to the same group that discovered anime and manga, and they don't need to be hit over the head with well-known actors. There's an appreciation for the filmmaking."

Review: Speed Grapher

anime speed grapher
I haven't seen Speed Grapher, but I want to after reading this review!

his is probably the episode receiving only a (o) rating from me which left me with the best feeling so far. Why? Because it's becoming more and more evident that Speed Grapher is about telling a story first and foremost, and not just a show counting on cheap shock thrills. Yes, those also have a prominent role, but I'm increasingly convinced by now that the series has some real meat and bones.

The episode tells the background story of the descending "goddess" from the first episode, Kagura Tennouzo, who is also the sole daughter of the current zaibatsu leader Shinsen Tennouzo. It's a tale devoid of any traces of warmth, happiness or comedic relief, therefore don't expect receive any enjoyment from episode 2 (hence the low rating) - other than the insight that any anime who is willing to take this risk so early in the series must be confident in its own values.

Obsessive Movie Review: Insterstella 5555.

anime Interstella 5555
I liked this review:

Interstella 5555: 5ecrets of the 5tellar 5tar 5ystem has become my latest of obsessions. Now lets get one thing right out on the table. I don't really dig daft punk. I hated "Around the World". I mean HATED it. Part of it was the instant dislike for anything that achieves that level of popularity, but part of it is that the track itself, wasn't really all that interesting. It just wasn't that good. (now Rollin and Scratchin was cool.) It spawned an entire genre of talkboxy tracks, culminating in everyone believing in life after love. (or was it love after love? who cares?)

I can't wait to check out Astronaut after this post. Very cool anime in the video.

I really dig the new album Astronaut, I believe it is the best they have ever put out. My favorite part of the show had to be the Anime video that was playing during Careless Memories, it featured the mates in Duran Duran as Anime heros taking on monsters, aliens and gunmen; oh and EMI their former label. At the climax of the video a giant Simon attacks and destroys the EMI building. Good stuff.

Woah?! CLAMP has finally released it! It’s their masterpiece! Many CLAMP characters from different Anime are all in this one series! I was surprised at first but hey… what the heck? Based (somewhat) on actual events

anime megatokyo graphic magazine
I'd like to see the Gallagher-inspired work:

I got the latest Megatokyo graphic novel yesterday (if you haven’t realized, my art is very much Fred Gallagher-inspired). I’d stopped at Borders to see if they have the first volume of I”s, a romance shonen that Shonen Jump is going to start publishing soon; from what I’ve seen of it, it has godly-lifelike art…plus, according to a review in an earlier issue of SJ, plenty of romance, angst, and fanservice. :P Sounds intriguing.

To Sakuracon or Not To Sakuracon

anime convention
Is Sakuracon convention in Seattle worth $30 for one day?

Additionally, while looking at their site, I did stumble across a link to Sakura-Con, an Anime festival that’s going on here in Seattle this weekend. I’m hardly the biggest Anime fan out there, but what little I’ve seen I’ve generally liked — however, while I’m sure there might be a number of photo opportunities there, I’m not sure it’d be worth the $30 one-day fee to wander around on my own for a few hours.

BitTorrent Client for Anime

anime bow to the cow
Here's a fast way to get lots of anime:
I get tons of anime via BitTorrent and one of my favorite BitTorrent clients has been BitTornado (previously known as Shadow’s Experimental client - nice rebranding too). I liked it because it was simple and light, and it uses the latest official BitTorrent code that allows for incremental allocation of files (since version 3.3). Before, BitTorrent would allocate the entire required disk space for the files you’re downloading prior to actually connecting to peers/seeders.

Sakura Con

anime sakuracon costume
This blogger will be checking out the anime costumes at Sakura Con.

This weekend I head on to Sakuracon for the 5th time in my life. I go for the same reason other people take drugs, go to DisneyLand, or see Salvador Dali movies repeatedly. I see things that I wouldn’t normally see in polite society, nor would I want to. I get my creative muscles massaged with the sensory overload of candy-colored images flying by at the speed of light. The kind of inspiration I get from anime conventions is quite unlike what you’ll find in art museums or interpretive dance shows (the irony of which has been hacked up and subjugated for a hilariously inflated art market, but that’s another post altogether). It’s loud, brash, and commercial, but it also tries to be different.

Review: Genshiken

anime Genshiken
Nice review of Genshiken:

The character design is down to earth where most of them portrayed as a commoner plus loser plus an otaku. The only usual anime-like character that seen in this only Kohsaka Makoto (an otaku who do not look like an otaku) and Kasukabe Saki (Kohsaka’s childhood sweetheart and one who ironically dislike otaku). The rest are the usual common-people type of characters such as Madarame Harunobu (a hardcore otaku), Kugayama Mitsunori (a stuttering big guy) and Tanaka Souichiro (a cosplay and plamo fanatic).

IGPX to Air on Cartoon Network

anime toonami comes to U.S.
Cartoon Network partners with Production I.G. and Bandai Entertainment to air IGPX.

Today at the 2005 Tokyo Anime Fair in Japan, Cartoon Network unveiled the highly anticipated new series, IGPX. Cartoon Network has been a pioneer in bringing popular Japanese animation to the U.S., expanding the fan base further than ever expected. Now, Cartoon Network leads the pack once again by partnering with acclaimed animation studio, Production I.G. and Bandai Entertainment to produce IGPX, an original series for Toonami, the Cartoon Network action programming block that first brought anime to wide audiences in the U.S.

IGPX will combine the talents of both Cartoon Network and Production I.G., establishing a new production paradigm. Blending the quality and style of anime with Western storytelling, IGPX will be the first instance of a U.S. cable network working directly with a Japanese animation studio to create an original series. The new original series that uses both traditional and CGI animation will debut in Fall 2005 during Toonami, currently #1 in the U.S. with boys 9-14 and 12-17 for 2005 to date.

Looking to Japan

haibane renmei
Out of ongoing frustration with the quality of american movies, Brian over at Samizdata has gone to internet video clips. But in the comments, Steve ("taste arbiter") den Beste plugs the Haibane Renmei DVD, one of our favorites.
I just watched the series Haibane Renmei and I can tell you truly that it was utterly innovative, totally unlike anything I had ever seen before, and among the very best things I've ever watched. I recommend it highly. It's an extraordinary series, released here in the US on 4 DVDs.
You need to actually read through both the article and the comments on this one.

Anime Rant

anime naruto characters
This blogger is ranting on development of some anime programs.
Speaking of Champloo, the Naruto anime is becoming quite sad. Main characters are just dying off one by one. I mean, okay, they will most probably come back to life in some cheesy illogical way or another, but why? I mean, think about the young kids that watch this movie faithfully and have no prior experience to other cheesy anime or to the fact that main characters will never die no matter what and start seeing episode after episode of their favourite Konoha ninjas dying. Surely it will traumatise them one way or another. Another bad thing is that the cheese factor of the anime went up a few more notches. Sigh, it might just turn into another DragonBall…

MomoCon

anime momocon anime costume
A MomoCon report from the south.

Ah well. All in all, it was a fun time, and being there for a con’s first year, even if you missed a good portion of it due to errands that needed running and the Easter holiday, is a cool thing. I hope it’s bigger next year, as the GA Tech Student Center is a pretty good venue. And the free admission and anime/jpop music playing over the speakers in the student center was cool too. =D Though I somehow doubt it’ll be free next year…

Circa a couple of years ago, first-year cons actually tended to get a lot of free stuff from distributors, vendors, and the like. I also believe that there are a couple of groups specifically dedicated to helping anime cons start up.

Naruto Review

anime naruto
This review of Naruto says that its anime is much better than Dragon Ball Z. Check it out for yourself.

Speaking on Dragon Ball, in my opinion, Naruto fighting scene and the way they fights is 100 TIMES BETTER than Dragon Ball. Why, there no way all of you want to play American Football with a truck, right? That what Son Goku in Dragon Ball for you. Don’t misunderstood me, where I was one time a Dragon Ball Z’s fan to boot

Prince of Tennis

anime prince of tennis
Not hard to figure out what this blogger thinks of Prince of Tennis.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG /joygasm. Prince of Tennis 177-178 was SO. DAMN. COOL. *o* It was SUCH a good ending for the anime! Ryoma was so cooolll. ;) Near the end of the Tezuka vs. Ryoma match, Ryoma kept saying “Imma made….Arigato gozaimasu!” which means “Up until now…Thank you very much!” *o**** It has such an exciting atmophere! He said that to everyone on the Seigaku team, then used their special move. For instance, “Kaidoh-senpai…Imma made…Arigato gozaimasu!” then...

This was a wonderful anime series. Right up there with Lain our books. (And perhaps even a bit more comprehensible.)

Astro Boy: The Complete Series

anime astroboy
Check out this review of the Astro Boy series.

There are Spanish and Portuguese language options, however they come without any subtitles, a serious bummer if anyone wants to watch this with non-English speakers in the room. The big disappointment here is that Sony didnt include the Japanese language option. Its likely the English dub is more subdued than what the Japanese had in mind, because thats usually the case with every anime dub. This is released as a show for the kids, not for the anime buffs. The English dub voices often dont match the character lip movements, at all, making for annoying open mouths with no noise coming out at a few points.

Drawn That Way

anime costumes
A little treatise on Anime, if you don't know.

For those fortunate enough not to know, anime is a term used to describe a type of highly stylized Japanese animation in which drawings of people with giant doe eyes are dogged by massive, anthropomorphic robots and the occasional ninja samurai. After cramming my head full of these cheesy Japanese cartoons, I invited local husband-and-wife anime fanatics Carlos and Christina Ross over to explain the appeal of this Bambi-eyed sci-fi mush, which -- despite its shiny, childlike veneer -- is clearly aimed at adults.

Review: Little Things Can Ruin Great Games

anime musashi samurai legend play station game
This reviewer doesn't like Musashi: Samurai Legend.

"Musashi: Samurai Legend" (Square Enix, for the PlayStation 2): "Musashi" is nearly a case study in sloppy game design. You're a lone samurai who must hack and slash his way through hordes of monsters to rescue a bunch of kidnapped villagers. You'll find yourself fighting the same monsters over and over, and they rematerialize a few seconds after you kill them. Once you find a villager, you have to carry her back home, stopping to put her down while you kill the same monsters all over again. Then, after you've completed the rescue, you must travel back through the same area for another rescue. The unique cel-shaded anime visuals of "Musashi" are delightful, but the voice acting is awful. The boss fights are challenging, but the jumpy camera makes it hard to pull off accurate attacks. It's a shame, because "Musashi" promises a fun mix of fighting, puzzles and role-playing — if you can live with the exasperation.

Sky Blue Anime Film Visually Stunning

anime sky blue
Sky Blue is turning heads with its visuals.

After one of the coolest opening sequences of any anime in recent years, the South Korean "Sky Blue" settles into a dystopian vision that's so derivative of a dozen other films that you wonder when a "Blade Runner" spinner-car will float down into the scenery. This stylistically impressive anime is devoid of original ideas.

Steamboy

anime steamboy
We saw this interesting item at www.nuvo.net:

Director Katsuhiro Otomo has long been hailed as one of the greatest of all animation directors in Japan. The seminal 1988 Akira sealed his reputation as anime’s answer to Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa. His output has been somewhat limited since then, with one of the main reasons being the 10-year odyssey that led to his latest masterpiece, Steamboy.

The story follows young Ray Steam in England, 1866, whose father and grandfather have developed an infinite source of super-steam energy that makes an infinity of wonders. Naturally, everybody on Earth wants it, most of them to create new ways to blow stuff up.

Plenty of Costumes at Anime Expo

anime costumes
This blogger went to a local Anime Expo. Plenty of attendees dressed in costume.
A fair percentage of female attendees dress in costumes like these two girls are wearing. Everyone in costume was very friendly and eager to have their photos made. Dressing as one's favorite character is all part of the fun and encouraged.

Cameron plans game-film experiment

Anime Kenny
We saw this interesting item at www.ferrago.com:

Battle Angel, based on classic anime Battle Angel Alita, is rumoured to be the Cameron project in question, and whilst the directors interest in a CGI-driven remake has been known for sometime, it seems the project may now be entering production. Of course, the game remains very much a mystery too, however an Xbox 2 version seems likely given the timing of the footage used in Allard's speech. We'll keep you posted for more news on this unusual creation.

Ms. Answerman: The Award Goes To...

Manga Takada
We saw this interesting item at www.animenewsnetwork.com:

When animes come to the United States are the DVD's edited? I know some DVD's say they are uncut and unedited but are they really? I bring this up because I am very concerned about the Naruto series when it gets released on DVD here because now that it is licensed it is only a matter of time so will the dvd's be unedited? I know Naruto is not some over the top anime series like Gantz and Elfen Lied but I am concerned because it's obvious that Naruto will be targeted at a younger audience to make more money. So although it is far from the most violent or anything like that I don't want things to change because it is targeted for kids because. Like when Kakashi does Chidori and Haku takes the hit that part was pretty bloody and so on.

Anime Talk (DVD Talk)

anime art
Hey, they've started reviewing Anime over at DVD Talk! Check out the first installment of this regular feature.

Welcome to the first installment of a new column here on DVDTalk! With anime becoming so popular, a couple of reviewers here thought it was high time for this genre to have a column all to itself. So after a little cajoling, a little pleading, and finally a lot of blackmail, we've managed to create a regular feature devoted to anime here at DVDTalk. We envision this as being a place where you can get all the information you need concerning anime DVDs in a brief and concise manner.

A wooden boy on a quest - in a galaxy far, far away (Seattle Times)

Anime Kenny
At seattletimes.nwsource.com, there's a great introduction to Anime, the good, the bad, and the ugly:

In the hit-or-miss spectrum of Japanese anime, two categories seem to dominate: one for certified masterpieces like "Spirited Away" and another for ambitious messes like Takashi Nakamura's 2002 epic "A Tree of Palme," where hints of greatness are subverted by frenetic plotting and sensory overload.
